What is the gender pay gap?
Below is a brief overview of what the gender pay gap is, who needs to report on it and when by.
The ‘gender pay gap’ is a report to show the difference in average earnings between women and men. Employers with more than 250 staff in England, Scotland and Wales must (by law) submit their organisation’s gender pay gap annually.

The gender pay gap figures you must report
- percentage of men and women in each hourly pay quarter
- mean (average) gender pay gap using hourly pay
- median gender pay gap using hourly pay
- percentage of men and women receiving bonus pay
- mean (average) gender pay gap using bonus pay
- median gender pay gap using bonus pay
When must the gender pay gap report be submitted?
You must report and publish your gender pay gap information at any time up to the reporting deadline, which is a year from your snapshot date.
30 March for most public authority employers
4 April for private, voluntary and all other public authority employers
Public authority employers are not required to submit a written statement
